Beckett Run Equestrian Team competes in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (see www.rideiea.com, the national sanctioning organization for high school and middle school equestrian. We compete throughout the year in IEA Zone 5 - Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana - as our riders try to score enough points to qualify for Regionals. Top riders and teams at Regionals qualify for Zones, and top teams and riders at Zones qualify for Nationals. Our typical schedule includes shows in September, October, November, and February thru April.
Team members are required to ride at least one lesson per week at Beckett Run, although most do two lessons per week - a half-hour private, and a one-hour group lesson with teammates. We also encourage team members to ride at schooling shows at the farm, and we attend OHJA shows, focusing on the equitation and OHJA medal. Our goal is to get as many team members as possible qualified for Medal finals.
We'll begin fornal practices in August. Riders who miss the August practices will not be eligible for the first shows in September.
The next show season runs from mid-September till the end of April. We compete in about ten shows all through the school year, but each kid is limited to 5 shows to score the points they need to qualify for Regionals. Top riders and teams from Regionals qualify for Zones, and tops from Zones qualify for Nationals. Our region (nearly all the shows we attend) includes southern Columbus area, Indianapolis area, down into northern Kentucky.

Choosing riders
Not everyone goes to all the shows - each show places limits on how many can enter from each team. Also, there are bigger choices to be made at the end of the year, as to which rider in each division will represent our team at Regionals, Zones, Nationals. It is the BIGGEST honor to be chosen to represent your team. Moreso than skill, these are the considerations in being chosen...
Work ethic - attendance in lessons, open to instruction, willing to do what it takes to be stronger and more prepared.
Horsemanship - clean tack, well groomed horse, professional and workman like in every way. This attention to detail in lessons is carried over to showing and many other aspects in life in general.
Appreciation of the lesson horses. They are the most important teacher. Their care before and after the lesson is very important.
Readiness - I would like to enter the most ready riders in as many shows as possible. I would also hope they would earn their needed points early to possibly open up opportunities for other teammates later in the year. The more riders our team qualifies for Zones, the more chances we have in taking riders on to Nationals.
Dedication - Mostly demonstrated through all the concepts above.
Concept of team - Not normally related to showing horses but is very important to this kind of showing. We coaches and the other riders need to feel comfortable that each rider holds the team's best interest above their own.
Accountability - mistakes happen, just don't make excuses. Own the mistake, learn from it and go on. This is sport where you have to be able to laugh at yourself.

BECKETT RUN
OUTFITTING GUIDELINES
Ours is a sport of conservative tradition, and judges expect to see classic, well-tailored fit, colors, and styles that make you look tall and thin and don’t draw attention away from your horse. What’s more, styles that work in hunters don’t necessarily work for equitation. No offense intended, but much of what you see in the Quarter horse, 4H, open show ring won’t work.
