Xavier Equestrian

WELCOME TO XUET

Thanks for your interest in Xavier Equestrian.   We need all experience levels to take a meaningful part in building something lasting and successful for Xavier University

.  This is an exciting time to be involved with XUET – we started from nothing three years ago, and have quickly become one of the most competitive teams in our region.  With key riders returning from last year’s team, and several new freshmen recruits, we’re a few riders away from a championship team.

i’ve spent over 20 years as a full time professional collegiate equestrian coach, and have coached over two dozen National Champion riders, mostly at Miami of Ohio, where Gwen and I built one of the top programs in the country.  I spent a year coaching Ohio State to the Nationals, before coming full time to the Xavier team a couple years ago.  I spend several weekends a year teaching clinics all over the country, in addition to training my own riders at home.  My riders become self-sufficient problem solvers, with a thorough understanding of what makes that relationship work between horse and rider.  I’m big into strength and fitness and demand attention to detail in everything you do – these are the qualities that make you successful in any sport, and in business and life long after riding.

We would love to have you as a part of the team!  That’s the best part – collegiate riding has made a team sport out of what is usually an individual sport.  It doesn’t matter what experience you have – in collegiate shows you compete against others with your same experience.  No matter your level, if you’re scoring points you’re the star of the team!  Our riders are very supportive of one another because they know that the success of the team depends upon the success of each individual member!  You’ll make some of your best lifelong friends here.

The next step is to get signed up for riding ASAP.  Contact Gwen at garrigon@hotmail.com or 513/839-5619 to discuss riding times.  We hope to hear from you soon.

XAVIER COMPETES IN IHSA

Xavier competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.  The IHSA includes nearly 400 colleges coast to coast and Canada, and over 8000 individual members.  Each team competes throughout the year in one of 31 geographic regions - ours includes Cincinnati, Louisville, and Lexington area.  Top riders and teams qualify for
Regional finals, with top riders and teams qualifying for Zone finals, then National Championships.

Ours is a pretty good region, with Kentucky being one of the top teams in the nation each year.  Xavier hung out in 2nd place for the first semester each of the past couple years, before running out of riders to fill all the positions later in the year.  Our top priority this year is to gather more riders to increase the team membership.

NEW HELMET recommendations !

I suggest you have a different practice helmet from your show helmet – your practice helmet will get pretty grimy!  You can practice in anything that is FEI approved, but I’m much pickier about your show helmet.

Your helmet really makes a statement about your riding – professional, neat, tidy, effective.  Fit is the most important thing, but style is important now, especially in college.  The hottest helmet right now is the Charles Owen Wellington or Wellington Pro - the “wolverine hat” I call it – with the wide panel down the center.  You can get it with a contrasting panel or in all black, but that is absolutely the hottest thing in the ring right now.  GPA is still in style, but the Charles Owen is a pretty good choice at 60% the cost!  There is also a Charles Owen look-alike made by International – less than the Owen and a fraction the cost of the GPA and some say it’s more comfortable than either.  I would spring the extra money for the real Owen for show, but the International is not a bad practice helmet.

The most important safety feature is the fit.  You need something that is comfortable and looks good on your face.  It also needs to fit well for safety - the Charles Owen owner told me that 90% or riders have a helmet that is too big!  He recommends this…  try helmets in the store with your hair down, and find something as small as comfortable with your hair down.  Try it on three times for a few minutes each time before you decide it is too small.  The microscopic foam bubbles burst to create a custom fit about your head.  After buying a new helmet, ride with it for a week with your hair down to break it in, then get used to riding with your hair up.  The helmet “breaks in” to a custom fit for your head..

MANDATORY MONTHLY MEETINGS to be scheduled by officers ASAP on the same day of each month, We’ll let you know when and where later.  Monthly meetings, home shows, and fundraisers are MANDATORY!  Plan for it now!  The ONLY excuse to miss is class, if you have an excuse signed by your professor

OUTFITTING GUIDELINES

Ours is a sport of conservative tradition, and judges expect to see classic, well-tailored fit, colors, and styles that make you look tall and thin and don’t draw attention away from your horse.  What’s more, styles that work in hunters don’t necessarily work for equitation.  No offense intended, but much of what you see in the Quarter horse, 4H, open show ring won’t work.  CLICK HERE to download the full outfitting guidelines, including photos..
